Project final report

1.1 Introducion

Hello everyone! I’m Sofía Rodríguez Ramírez, and I’m excited to share my final report for the WP Credits course. This report summarizes my contributions to the Polyglots team, the challenges I faced, and the skills I gained. I hope my experience inspires others to contribute to open-source projects!

1.2. Teams and Projects I Contributed To

I’ve only worked in the Polyglots team. Firstly I started translating the first plugin or team that I found, but after having a meeting I discovered how to translate the most popular plugins and themes. So I focused on that, to improve the accesibility for the people who don’t speak English.

1.3. Learning Resources

I started by watching the Polyglots team onboarding, and reading the WordPress Polyglots Handbook and the Spanish Glossary. My mentor, Isotta, organized meetups with some experts to explore other teams and to give us tips for translating.

1.4. Challenges and Solutions

The main challenge was the communicantion barriers because sometimes when someone corrected your strings and offered some changes they don´t specify the error. Another issue was that some of the words I didn’t know the translation or how to translated it, due to the fact that the literal translation wasn’t the correct one for that context.

I resolved this by asking for help in Slack and taking a look into the other translations to find a similar word in Spanish

1.5. My Contributions

Here is a list with all my contributions to the differents plugins and themes.

1.6. Key Learnings from the WP Credits Course

The WP credits course taught me the importance of teamwork, to communicate problems and help other people, to communicate clearly to solve the problems as fast as possible and that people that are not native understand your issue and to work with other people in diferrent countries and timezones.

1.7. New Skills Gained

Through this project, I gained:

  • Technical: DeepL, technical English depending on the subject of the theme or plugin, Slack.
  • Soft Skills: Asynchronous communication, time management, asking for feedback.

1.8. Personal Reflections and Next Steps

Working in WordPress has been an amazing experience! It has a lot of different options to contribute in and the community is so welcoming with everyone, they always try to help you. Moving foward, I would like to try new contributions teams and learn new things. I’d like to know how was the experience of other people!
